The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse provides compassionate, evidence-based obstetric care throughout the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum continuum, delivering exceptional patient safety and outcomes. Daily responsibilities include triaging obstetric patients, performing comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments, interpreting electronic fetal monitoring (AWHONN FHM standards), managing inductions and augmentations with oxytocin titration, starting IVs, administering medications (including epidural support and magnesium therapy), assisting and circulating/scrubbing for vaginal births and cesarean sections, executing obstetric emergency bundles (hemorrhage, preeclampsia, sepsis), coordinating care with OB/GYNs, certified nurse midwives, anesthesia, pediatrics/NICU, documenting accurately in the EMR, educating families on labor, recovery, newborn care, and breastfeeding, promoting skin-to-skin and Baby-Friendly practices, stabilizing newborns with NRP guidelines, and maintaining strict infection prevention, equipment checks, and unit readiness.
